Accelerating Strategic Alignment and Delivery Mobilisation of a Transformation Programme for Anglian Water to Tackle Water Pollution Risk

We facilitated a 3-day sprint to help Anglian Water rapidly mobilise a transformation programme aimed at proactively managing water pollution risks. This resulted in the development of key assets, including a data model, process map, governance framework, and ROI tracker, while ensuring all stakeholders were aligned and engaged.

Background

Anglian Water oversees a vast infrastructure network and faces significant challenges with pollution incidents that have significant environmental and financial repercussions. Despite longer-term capital investments, the industry needs more immediate interventions to not only reduce but also sustain lower levels of water pollution.

There is a push to adopt proactive and predictive strategies for managing pollution risks, optimising resource use and maximising ROI while adaptively reducing pollution.

Brief

Significant capital expenditure (CapEx) is planned for the water industry to more effectively address challenges beyond just enhancing preventative maintenance. The focus is on adopting a proactive and predictive strategy to better understand and manage blockage and pollution risks — optimising resource allocation and maximising return on investment (ROI) while flexibly mitigating pollution risks.

Anglian Water asked us to help them kickstart this transformation programme quickly, efficiently and productively.

IMPACT

Engaging Business Unit Leaders

We brought together a cross-functional group of senior professionals across water recycling, asset intelligence, optimisation, service delivery and maintenance teams, strategy and finance teams, for a 3-day in-person sprint, or Lab.

The Lab approach is not a conceptual design workshop. Instead, it’s a carefully facilitated, curated and accelerated work environment, to operationalise strategy.

For Anglian Water, the Lab focused on:

DAY 1 - Alignment of the framework, data assets and value/ROI approach.

DAY 2 - Co-design of a better end-to-end intervention process for data-driven risk prevention and rapid development of programme assets and deliverables.

DAY 3 -  Finalise assets and deliverables; agree on governance, RACI and communications plan for the transformation programme.

Outcomes

The 3-day Lab helped Anglian Water to achieve:

  • A v1 of the data model

  • A v1 process map of how different partners, service and maintenance teams would collaborate to implement interventions based on data

  • A governance model and RACI for immediate implementation

  • A risk/value ROI framework, benefits tracker and communications plan

We accelerated the beginning stages of a transformation programme to create tangible progress, reducing waste of time and money.

Anglian Water benefitted by bringing all the relevant stakeholders together in one space, ensuring that the outcomes were co-owned and co-developed, maximising their impact and achievability moving forward.
